Lady Jays scuttle Pirates

While the storms raged outside, the Marshfield Lady Jays took care of business at Pleasant Hope High School Monday night.

The Lady Jays improved to 15-0 with a 67-39 nonconference basketball victory.

The Marshfield players, cheerleaders and their fans were then treated to pizza while waiting out a series of fast-moving storms in the Pleasant Hope High School library.

The host Pirates hit 5-of-7 field goals, including the only 2 treys they attempted in the first period, staying with the Lady Jays. Marshfield led 13-12 after the opening stanza, thanks to 6 points from senior Lacey Boshe and a trey from freshman Amanda Gourley. Pirate Alex Benson, a 5-11 junior, scored 8 points without missing a shot to keep the hosts close in the first quarter.

The Lady Jays pressure defense began to take a toll in the second period, forcing 5 turnovers and limiting Pleasant Hope to just 3-of-9 shooting from the field. Junior Morgan Smith hit 4-of-4 field goals in the period to lead Marshfield to a 31-19 halftime lead.

The Lady Jays broke the game open in the third period, hitting 9-of-10 field goals, including 3-of-4 treys, and both free throws they attempted, building a 54-27 advantage.
