10 Varsity and JV squads from 7 towns competed in a football camp hosted by Evangel University at Marshfield’s R.A. Barr Athetic Stadium. Aurora, Ava, Bolivar, Cabool, Greenfield, Marshfield and Willow Springs all got a chance to work on offensive and defensive skills while facing each other over the last 2 days.
Team offenses worked on 7 on 7 passing, team running and play action pass, as well as pounding the ball with the inside running game. Defences worked on stopping the offence.
Teams also got to face one another in a series of team challanges and Jamboree style competitions. The camp ended with a Camp Challange that was a single elimination tounament with a sudden death overtime situation.
The single elimination Tournament got down to a championship matchup between Bolivar and Marshfield. This matchup went two full overtime sessions before a winner was crowned. Marshfield started out on O, but Bolivar kept us from scoring. Marshfield then intercepted a Liberator pass to end the possession.
In the second overtime Bolivar started with the ball first and pounded it in for a touchdown. Marshfield held them out on the PAT.
Marshfield was down to their last possession, we had to score or lose. The ball was placed on the 25 and the first three plays were stuffed, making it 4th down and long. Thats when this teams ‘Never say die’ attitude burst out. Keenan hit Shaun Steele with a 20 yard pass on fourth down to earn a new set of downs. From the 5 the JAYS were able to pound the ball in with Cody Brown scoring to tie the game.
On the PAT Keenan carried out a perfect fake after handing off to Bigley, and Bigley followed his line into the endzone for the win!
After the game Evangel’s Coach Gehring challenged each player and coach to make a positive "IMPACT" on the people around them. He encouraged them to do this by "making the right choices" and by "having the strength to say no to the negative peer pressures in high school life."
