Jays hold on to beat Lebanon (Rebroadcast Available)

The Marshfield Blue Jays shut out Lebanon in the first quarter of the third place game at the Logan-Rogersville High School Basketball Tournament Saturday, building a 17-0 lead.

The Blue Jays held on for a 48-42 victory, improving to 10-9 on the season. Lebanon, which had defeated Marshfield earlier this season at Lebanon, fell to 13-7.

“I was really proud of the way our guys played,” Marshfield coach Tom Stokes said. “They did everything I asked them to do.”

Senior Justin Drane scored 7 points while junior Charlie Williams and senior Kelby Phelps each scored 5 points in the amazing first period. Lebanon was 0-for-11 shooting in the first period.

“I told our guys that I’m not going to substitute while we’re shutting a team out,” Stokes said. “As soon as Lebanon scored in the second period, I called time out and put in some other players.”

Lebanon fought back with a 10-2 run in the second period. Marshfield made only one field goal in the second stanza, but still led 24-12 at intermission.

The Yellowjackets fought back to within two possessions of the lead in the second half before Marshfield regained control of the game.

“We didn’t do a lot of things right early in the second half,” Stokes said. “But the guys did everything right at the end.”

Marshfield hit 10-of-15 free throws down the stretch, and controlled the backboards, letting Lebanon have just one shot during crunch time.

Three Blue Jays wound up scoring in double figures, and 2 other Marshfield players led the rebounding effort.

“I told the guys at halftime that every one of them had contributed to our lead,” Stokes said. “I thought we really showed good depth and balance during the tournament.”

Kelby Phelps led the Marshfield scoring with 15 points, hitting 3 treys in the game with 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.

Justin Drane finished with 13 points, hitting a trey with 2 rebounds, a steal and an assist in the game for the Blue Jays.

Charlie Williams added 10 points, making 3-of-5 field goals and 4-of-5 free throws for Marshfield with 2 rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot in the game.

Justin Jones led Marshfield rebounding with 7 boards, scoring 4 points with 2 assists in the contest.

Alex Bartow pulled down 5 rebounds for the Blue Jays with a steal in the game.

Senior guard Derek Welch hit both free throws he tried in the game, improving to 10-for-10 at the line this season, scoring 2 points for Marshfield.

Cameron Keenan had a steal and an assist, Jason Young pulled down 2 rebounds and Jordan Jones had a rebound and an assist in the game for the Blue Jays.

Josh Lamkins and Ryne Bechtel each scored 8 points for Lebanon while Andrew Adkins finished with 7 points in the contest.

Kalem Coping scored 6 points with 8 rebounds for the Yellowjackets. Kyle Poyner finished with 5 points and 6 rebounds while Ryan Howerton hit a trey for Lebanon.

The Marshfield junior varsity lost the third place game 45-40 to Lebanon in the JV tournament Saturday.

In the varsity championship contest, Republic beat Rogersville 48-45 on a buzzer beating half court shot by Trenton Laffoon.
