Your Marshfield Blue Jays knew going in that this was a big game. The Rogersville Wildcats came into town boasting a 13-5 record and were looking for a top district seed. Marshfield entered the contest at 7-7 and 3-4 in COC play. Before the game, coach Mac talked about the implications of today’s game. "This would be a huge win for us. I told the kids that we could possibly get a 3 or 4 seed come districts with a win here today."
Win is just what the Blue Jays did.
In the first inning, Tim Ryan struck out the first two Wildcat batters before giving up a walk, but got the Wildcats clean up man Andy Leingang to ground out 6-3 to end the inning. In the bottom of the first, after leadoff batter Cameron Keenan struck out, Garrett Cardwell battled at the plate fouling off several strikes before earning a walk. Cardwell then stole second and was driven home when Justin Fraker singled, putting the Jays on top 1-0. Chris Arnold then walked on four straight pitches. Nathan VanDiggelen singled loading the bases. Chris Bigley went down swinging for the second out of the inning. In steps Tim Ryan. After going down in the count 0-2, Ryan battled the count to full. That allowed the runners to be going with the pitch. Ryan smashed the 3-2 pitch all the way to the centerfield fence, bouncing off the bottom of the fence scoring all the runners with a stand up double. Jordon Jones struck out to end the inning, but the damage was done. Marshfield was up 4-0.
Rogersville manufactured their only run in the 5th when Austin Fax drew a walk and then stole second. Fax scored when Ethan Simon singled.
Marshfield answered with 3 more in the bottom of the fifth making the final 7-1.
Marshfield’s starting pitcher, sophomore Tim Ryan, struck out 9 while walking only 4. He threw 7 innings to complete the game for Marshfield and allowed only 1 run. Tim also caught a runner trying to steal in the 4th with a 1-3-6 put out.
Cardwell scored twice after walking and reaching on an error.
Fraker scored twice going 2-3 in the game with 2 singles.
Arnold scored twice after walking and smashing a double. Chris also threw out a Wildcat trying to steal.
VanDiggelen scored once going 2-3 with a single and a double.
Special Thanks to my 9 year old son Bo Atkison for taking todays pictures, and also a Big Thank You to Alyssa Atkison who helped me in the booth!
Rogersville took the JV game 7-4.
