JV Lady Jays win at Lebanon

The Marshfield Junior Varsity Lady Jays continued their hot start to the 2007-08 basketball season with a 61-57 victory at Lebanon High School on Thursday.

Marshfield improved to 6-1 with the hard-fought victory.

Lebanon jumped on top 8-2 in the early going, and led 12-8 after one period. But Marshfield cut the lead to 16-14 and only trailed 31-29 at intermission.

The Lady Jays fell behind by 5 points in the third period before Kayla Baldwin started scoring at will. Baldwin, a 5-3 freshman, scored 14 points in the quarter, hitting a basket which tied the game at 47 in the final minute of the stanza. Baldwin finished with 18 points, five rebounds, a steal and an assist in the game, making 8-of-13 field goals for Marshfield.

Justina Burney hit a pair of free throws to give Marshfield a 53-50 lead early in the final period. The Lady Jays went up 56-52 on a basket by Kaitlyn Murgel with 5:13 to play, with an outstanding assist from Shelby Porter. A basket and a pair of free throws by Chelsea Ahrens helped Marshfield stay in front down the stretch.

Ahrens finished with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist for the Lady Jays.

Porter added 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and a blocked shot to the winning effort.

Burney scored 9 points for Marshfield with 4 rebounds and a steal in the game.

Sarah Neptune finished with 4 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals for the winners.

Jessie Bruton scored 4 points with 4 steals and 2 assists for the Lady Jays.

Murgel added 2 points, 3 reboundsw, 2 steals and 2 assists to the winning attack.

Ashley Honeycutt scored 2 points for Marshfield with 3 steals, 2 rebounds and an assist.

Amber Root led Lebanon with 13 points and 4 rebounds. Megan Stamm added 12 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks to the Yellowjackets attack.

Krenda McClure finished with 10 points, 5 steals, 3 rebounds and 2 assists for Lebanon.
