Your Marshfield Lady Jays battled with the host Rogersville Wildcats on Saturday. The game was scoreless through 5 and 1/2 innings with fantastic defense, the story of the game. Marshfield’s defense relied on the pitching of freshman Ashton Worth as she struck out 14, walked 2, hit 1 batter, and allowed only 1 hit, a third inning two out single. Rogersville’s defense was able to turn 2 double plays to keep the Jays from scoring in the second and again in the fifth. Marshfield was also able to work out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the sixth.
There is really only one inning to talk about offensively and that happened in the bottom of the 6th inning. The game was tied at 0-0 when Hannah Keeth got things started with a lead off single. Freshman Emily Crowley came in to do the courtesy running for the catcher. Tessa Jones sacrificed Crowley over to second, then Sanders bunted her over to third. With two out and Crowley at third, Rogersville called timeout. Most in the crowd, including the announcer, figured they would walk Baderdeen. The catcher set up outside, but the first pitch went into the strike zone for strike 1. The catcher set up even farther outside for the second pitch, but not far enough. Baderdeen reached out and smashed the outside pitch over the center field wall to make the score 2-0. That was all the Lady Jays would need as Ashton struck out the side in the top of the seventh, and your Lady Jays are DISTRICT CHAMPIONS!
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE MARSHFIELD LADY JAYS…..AND GOOD LUCK ON WEDNESDAY!
