The Marshfield Lady Jays took to the road on Tuesday night to face the Lady Pirates of Branson. From the first pitch it was a pitcher’s duel. Lady Pirates Junior pitcher Hannah Johnson started the game with a strikeout and retired 12 of the first 13 Lady Jays batters. She ended the game with 9 strikeouts, allowing only two hits and walking three. As great as that performance was, Ashton Worth for the Lady Jays was better. Ashton, pitching for the second day in a row, allowed only one hit, and struck out 14, while walking only one. Ashton pitched her second shutout in 24 hours. Ashton and her defense sat down the first 15 Lady Pirate batters in a row.
In the bottom of the sixth, Branson got their first base runner when Amanda Holder singled to lead things off. Ashton then struck out the next batter. Chelsea Weston grounded out 2nd to first, for the second out. Then came a classic at bat. With two down and one on, Branson pitcher Hannah Johnson stepped in the batter’s box. Worth pitched 11 times to Johnson before Johnson finally walked after fouling off pitch after pitch. With two out, and two on at second and third (after a passed ball advanced both base runners) Ashton struck out the next batter to end the inning.
Ashton the led off the seventh with a walk. Hannah Bigley then reached on an error. Alexis Navarro singled to load the bases. Kiana Baderdeen reached on the second error of the inning scoring Ashton from third for the only run of the game. In the bottom of the seventh, the first batter flied out to center on the first pitch, the second batter was put out by first baseman Bigley, and the final batter of the game lined out right back to the pitcher. Lady Jays win 1-0.
