2017 Football Jamboree Recap

The Marshfield Blue Jays under the direction of new Head Coach Cody Bull had a major obstacle in the 2017 Football Jamboree at Glendale High school.  The two opponents we faced had a combined record of 22-2 last year.  Glendale 11-1. Fair Grove 11-1.  Marshfield had a record of 2-8.  In the off season Springfield Kickapoo hired our head coach leaving the opening for us to get Coach Bull.  Coach Bull was working as a defensive coordinator in Texas – a position he once held here in Marshfield for the Blue Jays.

The format for preseason high school football consists of 3 teams getting together and running 18 offensive plays and 18 defensive plays against each of the other teams.  Marshfield arrived ready for the challenge.

The first contest of the evening was between our Blue Jays and the Glendale Falcons.  Glendales’ high powered offence hit the field first against our Blue Jays D.  Glendale returns its entire offensive line and one of the nations most prolific quarterbacks Alex Houston.  Last year this unit accounted for a state record 6,131 yards and 76 touchdowns.  Houston has accumulated 145 touchdowns in his high school career, and can break the national touchdown record if he gets 74 this year.  The national touchdown record is held by the son of his head coach – former MIZZOU quarterback Maty Mauk.  The Marshfield D did rather well vs the Glendale offense.  Unofficially the Jays give up only 80 yards and 1 TD in 18 plays.

Marshfields’ offense was able to get 181 yards and 2 TD’s vs Glendales’ Defense.  The first 80 yard drive featured a 53 yard break away run from Jason Whittington to the 1 yard line, (he said he made it in….i believe him)  capped off with a 1 yard TD by Brock Utecht.   We do not have individual stats for the Jays because they wore black pullovers with no numbers.

The second contest vs  Fair Grove the Blue Jay D allowed only 34 yards in 18 plays and no touchdowns.

Marshfield was able to score once on an 80 yard TD drive was capped off with a 40 yard pass from Utecht to Will Smith.  (see video) and accumulated a total of 111 yards.
