Even the youngest man ever to win 500 high school basketball games in Missouri finds coaching a team with a record of 20-0 a new experience.

Coach Gary Murphy’s Marshfield Lady Jays reached that vaunted mark with a 60-25 Central Ozark Conference victory at Buffalo High School on Monday night.

“That group with (Natalie) Mottesheard, and (Jennifer) Fisher (and fellow seniors Lacey Messick, Bre’ Rose, Maggie Harles, Mindy Buckner and Maegan Uchtman) went 31-1,” Murphy explained how his 2007-08 squad is his first Lady Jays team to hit 20-0. “But we lost to Republic in the Rogersville Tournament a little before this time of year.”

The Lady Jays set a state record with 102 consecutive wins, a streak which included three consecutive undefeated state championships in 1987-88, 1988-89 and 1989-90, a streak which ended Murphy’s first season, 1990-91, which was also a state championship season with an edition of the Lady Jays which finished with a record of 30-2. Murphy’s 1998-99 Lady Jays won the state title at 31-1, and his 1995-96 team won a state title at 29-4, while his 1996-97 squad won the state title at 30-2.

But this season’s Lady Jays have compiled the best record for Murphy in his storied stint at Marshfield.

At Buffalo Monday night, senior Lacey Boshe scored 7 points and senior Jaysa Hartman hit a pair of treys to lead the Lady Jays to a 20-4 lead after one period. Marshfield led 30-17 at halftime.

Sophomore Ashley Boshe and her older sister Lacey combined to score 16 points without missing a shot in the third period as Marshfield extended the lead to 46-22.

The Lady Jays made 5-of-7 field goals, 2-of-2 treys and 2-of-2 free throws in the final period to seal the deal.

Lacey Boshe finished with 18 points on 8-of-10 field goals and 2-of-3 free throws with 5 rebounds and 3 assists in the game.

Jaysa Hartman added 12 points, hitting 4-of-6 3-point attempts with 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Ashley Boshe added 10 points on 4-of-6 field goals and 2-of-2 free throws with 4 rebounds and a steal.

Senior Sara Jane Plemmons scored 9 points with 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists in the game for Marshfield.

Freshman Amanda Gourley finished with 6 points in the game for the Lady Jays, making 2-of-3 field goals, a trey and the only free throw she tried with 2 steals, a rebound and an assist.

Senior Kassie Hyde had a rebound and an assist for Marshfield.

Anna Glenn picked up a steal and Kayla Baldwin had a rebound for the winners.

Kylee Henderson, the only Bison senior, led Buffalo with 10 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists in the game.
