Marshfield was pushed to the limit and then some, but in the end it was the Lady Jays and their fans who were smiling.

Nixa jumped out to the early lead by scoring 2 in the top of the 3rd.  Nixa’s junior pitcher Hallie Peterson held the bluejays at bay.  Peterson retired the first seven bluejay batters in a row before Anna Glenn tripled to give the team some confidence at the plate.  Glenn scored as the next batter, Karisa Lorenz, sacrificed Glenn in from third with the suicide bunt.  That play cut Nixa’s lead to 2-1.  Nixa answered with 2 more runs in the fourth and took a 4-1 lead after 3 1/2.  The Jays wouldn’t quit as they chipped away at Nixa by adding one run in the fifth and another in the sixth, tying the score going into the seventh inning.

In the seventh, Nixa mounted a charge by getting their first two batters of the inning on first and second.  The lead off batter drew a walk and the second batter of the inning tried to sacrifice the runner to second by bunting.  On the play, Morgan Smith and Kelsey Kleeman both charged the ball and noone was covering first on the play.  After the error on the second baseman, Kleeman struck out the next batter, then went on to get the next eagle batter to pop out in foul territory as Marshfield third baseman Amy Crawford caught the ball up against the fence right by the home-team dugout.  With the runners still at first and second, Kleeman’s defense got her out of the jam when Nixa’s Sebree popped out to second.

After the first two bluejays were retired in the 7th, the Jays tried to rally with a couple of singles and a double steal.  With Jays on 2nd and 3rd with two outs, Peterson recorded her 6th strikeout of the game to get out of the jam.

The lady Jays held the Eagles in the eighth, due partly to a great throw down to second by Marshfield catcher Hannah Keeth.  Latasha Baderdeen made the tag for the out on the stealing baserunner trying to advance.

With the score tied in the bottom of the eighth, Morgan Smith beat out an errant throw to first, Hannah Keeth singled, and Anna Glenn reached first on a catcher’s interference call to load the bases with no outs.  Karisa Lorenz smashed a shot to left field that drove in the winning run for the lady jays.

Marshfield moves to 7-2 on the season and will host ‘Softball Saturday’ this weekend when Lebanon and Morrisville come to town.  You can see game times on the schedule posted on this site.
