The Blue Jays dominated the line of scrimmage Friday night, rolling to a 30-13 victory over Parkview in the 2007 Marshfield High School home opening football game.

Marshfield set the tone with the first possession of the game, marching 47 yards to pay dirt with just three running plays after a 39-yard opening kick off return by Zach Hildebrand. Jordan gained 12 yards on the first play from scrimmage and Zach Reed gained 12 on the second as the Marshfield line pushed the visitors around. Chris Bigley scored from 28 yards out on a run up the middle which gave the Blue Jays a lead they would never relinquish with 10:50 to play in the opening period.

About the only glitch in the Marshfield attack was the point after touchdown team, which was unsuccessful all night.

Marshfield’s second possession began at the Blue Jays 29, and Theobald racked up 55 yard rushing on six carries to highlight a 12-play, 71-yard scoring drive which was capped off by a 22-yard touchdown run by quarterback Cameron Keenan. Keenan’s first run of the game came on the first play of the second period, and put Marshfield up 12-0.

Theobald finished with 185 yards rushing in the game after 18 carries.

Parkview took advantage of a Marshfield fumble midway through the second period, getting a 35-yard TD run from Josh Messick, Bart Hand kicked the point after to cut the Marshfield lead to 12-7 with 8:32 remaining in the second period.

Marshfield went right back to work after the ensuing kick, marching from the Jays 28 to the Parkview 21 on a time consuming drive of 12 running plays. James Reese drilled a 38 yard field goal with just 37.1 seconds remaining in the first half, giving the Jays a 15-7 lead.

Marshfield’s defense shut Parkview down after the ensuing kick, and the Jays used time outs wisely, giving the offense a final shot. On the final play of the first half, Theobald raced 46 yards for a TD which gave a 21-7 lead at intermission.

The Marshfield defense was unyielding in the second half. The Jays forced a fumble on the third play after intermission, and James Washburn recovered the Parkview miscue at the Viking 12. Three plays later, Reese added a 26 yard field goal which gave the Jays a 24-7 lead.

Marshfield kept Parkview pinned down deep in Viking territory throughout the third period, and the Blue Jays partially blocked a punt with 1:34 to play in the stanza, giving the Jays a first down at the Parkview 29.

Keenan capped a 7-play drive with a 1-yard TD run which put Marshfield on top 30-7 with just 9:15 to play in the game. Keenan had a key third down conversion run during the short drive as well, and finished with 36 yards rushing on just five carries in the game.

There were no pass completions during the game, which was played during a steady light rain.

Parkview, now 0-2 on the season, took advantage of another Marshfield fumble in the final moments of the game, getting a 5-yard TD run from Messick to account for the final score.

The Marshfield line helped a handful of Marshfield backs to a big night, with Reed running for 65 yards on 14 carries and Bigley gaining 52 yards on just five carries.

The Blue Jays, now 1-1, will host Reeds Spring in the Central Ozark Conference opener for both teams next Friday.
